Yes, it can be played with hands or sticks both (sticks are included), but need to know that for beginners it may take some time to understand the technique of hands playing, it's a kind of percussion kick, not just a touch.
From start you can use sticks and bit by bit move on to playing with hands — with regular practice it will not take you more than a week.
